What is iboot 596.24? Downgrade to 3.1.2?

Bought a 3g recently. Been searching around and could not find answer that I could understand. I put my 3g iphone in DFU and found the iboot is 596.24 through the Device Manager. The number seems so different from the 5.08 and 5.09 that everyone is talking about.

What is iboot 596.24?
Is it equivalent to 5.09?
Will iboot 596.24 cause any potential problem if I downgrade to 3.1.2 and jailbreak?

My phone is ios 4.1, baseband 5.14. Sorry for the noob questions. Any advice or suggestion is greatly appreciated. Thanks

iboot is normally known as 2nd stage bootloader/recovery mode (iBoot (Bootloader) - The iPhone Wiki) while 5.8,5,9,6.2.6,4 is the baseband bootloader. iboot can be found in every firmware.

Use irecovery from ih8snow or tinyumbrella to check the baseband bootloader.

Hi Fwb2700, thanks for the great stuff. I was waiting for some answers on the 596.24 before I go ahead with your tut. But phone was very laggy at 4.1 and I went ahead with your tut last night, downgrade to 3.1.2 without problem and its running so much better. I then jailbreak using the easy way jailbreakme and it works . Is this as stable as the redsnow method?

After jailbreaking, I install Fuzzyband and guess what it says..... bootloader 5.08 . Downgrade the bb from 5.14 to 5.13 and now the phone can be unlocked .
