Is a iPhone upgrade still possible if....
Hello, I have a iPhone 3g that i am going to upgrade to an i4 come March when i am eligible. (I would love to wait on the i5 but I'm sure it will be a lot more $$ than just upgrading to an i4.)
My question is this, recently i have had some serious issues with my phone and the back cover and screen both cracked within weeks of each other, I ordered a new back and digitizer/screen and will be installing them just soon as they both arrive.
So..will Apple still give me a upgrade even though I fixed and replaced parts on my phone myself? I know this voids the warranty, but does this also void the upgrade option?
I also must add that the back cover I was sent is white even though I ordered black, I kept it because it looks cool, but will Apple be cool about this as well?
I would hate to wait several months for an upgrade with a broken phone or spend big bucks getting Apple to fix the screen for me.
Thanks in advance.

You're fine. The device is "yours" after the 2 year contract is up... You can do whatever you want to it, seeing as you get to keep it when you get the new one.
You don't even need to bring your old one with you, because you'll be getting a new SIM with the iPhone 4.
But if you CAN wait for the iPhone 5, DO IT. The price points should stay the same when it comes out.

Like Monsieurtalbot said, normally when new iPhone models come out, the upgrade via contract stays the same. Like when the iPhone 3GS was the latest model, I'm pretty sure the prices were the same as the iPhone 4, $200 for 16GB upgrading, $300 for 32GB.

I was gonna wait on the 5 but it's going to have the same tiny screen so I'm just gonna get a 4 and retire from all this stuff.. I'm getting too old for this stuff

With Apples track record, you may be waiting longer than anticipated for the iP5 to even be released. If your 3G can hold out, then by all means try to wait... but do not count on it anytime soon. You could always get the 4 now and resell it later to buy a 5. I have noticed that iDevices hold their value over time more than any other phone on the market. 3G's are still selling for $150-200 even tho the 4's have been out for almost a year now. I would say the 4's will be selling for no less than $300-400 for at least the next 2 years.

I would agree with the above comment about the value staying. The ip4 is a awesome device and Is still going to be the go to device for people wanting mobile games and what not for a while to come. You will have no problem selling it for a decent chunk of the 5's price tag
