Network Problem

Does anyone has the issue when the iphone goes into a 2G area and then to a 3G coverage area, it remains in 2G. Only after toggling airplane mode or rebooting the device (3GS) then it will log on back to 3G network.

Help?Advice?

Did you recently upgrade to 3.1.2?
Are you jailbroken? How did you jailbreak?
Has it been doing this recently or for a while?
Did you recently install/uninstall something?
Have you been having any other service provider issues (frequent dropped calls, not receiving voicemail/texts, push breaks, data drops, etc.)?

Here are some possible answers with what you have given us:

The tower in your area has bad routing services (or router). (You'll have to wait for your provider to repair the issue.)
You have a bum antenna. (iPhone will need to be replaced/serviced.)
Something related to your restore or jailbreak went haywire. (Do a clean restore and jailbreak.)
Something you installed/uninstalled screwed up some key network settting. (Do a Reset Network Settings.)

We really need more info to go on to help you, though.
If you have signatures turned off like I do, then you can't see this.

Hi all thanks

Iphone 3GS 3.1.2
Jailbreak.

It has always been like that since the first day i got the phone. Before and after jailbreaking.

I am not the only one which experience the same problem.

Basically, when my phone enters an area where there is little or no 3G network it will revert to basic network. However when it enters back into a area of 3G network, somehow it seems to just stay at the basic network (i.e i do not see the 3G logo)
Only after I toggle the airplane mode ( which only works sometimes) or I do a reboot, then I will log on back onto the 3G network.

Similar issues?

id have send it back to apple since the first day i noticed that. if restore doesnt fix your problem theres no other solution to it.
try to reset your networks settings in settings/general/reset if that doesnt work restore your phone to get rid of all jailbreak files then send it to apple they will send you a new one.

I worked for AT&T, and their "3g map" Isn't correct. Where i live it shows i have 3g but if you get down to street levels adn shit like that, certian places don't have 3g, I just leave my 3g off so i don't have to go through that problem.

I'm with dlx on this one. It really sounds like a broken antenna. Sync up all your music, contacts, videos, etc. Maybe download PkgBackup or make a list of your favorite Cydia apps. Then erase that phone (Go into Settings-->General-->Reset-->Erase all Contents and Settings), send it back to apple, and let them send you a new one.
If you have signatures turned off like I do, then you can't see this.

You can maybe try resetting network settings first. See if that helps. I've never seen or heard this before but might be something to try.
