This is the best place to receive the latest up-to-date news about Apple, assistance on any problem you may have with your iDevice and basically anything else that is somehow related to Apple. It is impossible for me to cover ALL the aspects of a forum so I will do as much as I can. This thread should be a great read for you as it will show you how to get started.
~What is a Forum?~
A forum is basically a place where users post and answer questions about various topic. This being an SiNfuL iPhone, we tend to discuss topics somewhat relating to Apple; or commonly referred to here as "(Cr)Apple".
~How Do I Use a Forum?~
Forums are not that hard to understand you you'll know your way around in a day or 2. But here is a good place to start reading on how to use this forum.
Now I will show you what various button you see will do and where they take you. Starting at the top of the page:
~ is the page that displays your user information, when you last logged on, which of your friends are online and a list of the threads started in the "Important News" section. This is probably the best place to get the latest scoop on iDevice information.
~ is where all the action takes place. This is where you can browse all of the sections of this forum. This is probably the page you want to bookmark
~ this is what you should click when you are on a mobile device. clicking on it will change the layout o the forum to make it iPhone friendly.
*Note, if you accidentally click on this on a computer, you can revert back to normal mode by scrolling all the way down and clicking on "Normal Version".
~ this is where you are able to do a live chat session with other members.
~ this is where you are able to access the instructions needs to access our repo. Link this page to all of your friends after you refer them to us
~ this is an extremely important section. It sets all the ground rules for you to function in this forum and not get banned. Make sure you familiarize yourself with all of these rules.
~ this is where you can see all the post that were made while you were offline or all the posts made today. Truly a great feature and one you will be using often.
~ this is where you can edit your avatar, signature and other misc stuff.
~ a generic menu that allows you to quickly change some of your options while setting preferences for the forum.
~ this is a list of people who didn't follow the rules and got what they deserved. Take a close look and see why they were banned so you are not next on the list...
~ this is used to search for threads or posts containing the criteria your desire. VERY USEFUL!!!
~ is a page where the boss answered many Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). Also a good read for newcomers.
~Viewing and Answering Posts~
After clicking one a thread that interests you, you might want to respond. You can do that by scrolling all the way down to write a quick response or click on the "Advanced" tab to create a more descriptive response. I will be showing you some other buttons you will encounter while answering or responding to other people's posts. Here are some things you will need to know how to use:
~ this allows you to edit a post you already made in order for you to correct a typo or change your mind about something.
~ this will quote the person who wrote the post and integrate it in your response. Useful when writing in an active thread so that the person you are writing to know you are writing to him and not addressing the general public.
~ this is a multi-quote. It is basically the same as the quote button but allows you to respond to multiple people in one post.
~ this is a quick response button. When clicked, it will automatically quote the poster and take you to the advanced screen to make your response.
~ this is probably the most important button you need to know how to use. When someone makes a post that is useful to you in any way, click this button. DO NOT WASTE TIME IN ACTUALLY WRITING "THANKS" BECAUSE IT ONLY CROWDS THE THREAD DROWNING OUT MEANINGFUL AND USEFUL POSTS.
~ this is the report button. In depth report on how to use this is explained below.
~How to use the "Report Post" Button~
The primary purpose of the button is to have an easy way to alert a mod about a post/thread that is breaking site rules. It also makes our lives (mods) a hellafalot easier. It may come as a surprise to you, but us mods have lives too and don't spend all day monitoring the forums. As members, you guys have access to an invaluable amount of iDevice information but also have a responsibility to keep the forum nice n' tidy. You guys report a post and we'll take care of business. Just a refresher of when to click the and when not to:
When to hit the Button:
~ Racist comments
~ Thread in the wrong section
~ Posts that make no sense
~ Posts in a different language
~ Posts with paid download links in them
~ Posts that refer people to other iPhone sites
~ Repost (Please Include Link to Other Post When Reporting These)
~ If a thread is started with the topic already discussed
~ Dead links
~ If someone posted a request as one of their first posts
When to NOT hit the Button:
~ ON THIS POST
~ If you don't like what the guy said
~ If you find the post useful (Yes, it happens )
~ If the guy swears
~ If the post offends you (Unless is it something severe e.g. racism, nationality...)
~ If you are having a bad day
Don't abuse the button but don't be afraid to use it. We won't ban you if you report something that didn't need to be reported. Thanks for you effort to keep this forum as awesome as it is now!
~Contacting Other Members~
There will be a time where you need to contact another member directly. You can do this privately or publicly:
This is the page you are taken to after you click on a user's name. It shows all the Visitor Messages they received, their friends, join date and other info.
~Contacting Them Publicly~
After clicking on their user name and when you reached their profile page, you will see a rectangular box as seen below which allows you to post messages to them. Note that everyone who accesses this page will see your messages.
~Contacting Them Privately~
This option is if you want to contact other users and not want anyone else to see. Usually when something goes wrong on your account or other personal issues. To send them a PM (Private Message), go to their profile page and select "Send Message" located under their Username then select "Send a Private Message to ...":
You can send them a PM without going to their profile page by selecting their name while in a thread and clicking "Send Private Message":
Assuming you have read everything I have posted, you should generally know how to get you way around the forum. Now I will show you some good places to get the ball rolling and you becoming a part of our community!
~ Introduce Yourself!~
Go here and make a thread saying hi. This will let you get to know some of the members and also receive a warm welcome
~ Get to Know the Forum Leaders~
Go here to see the Administrators, Supermoderators and Moderators of the site. If anything goes wrong with your account or you need assistance, it's good to know where you can get some help.
~Browse the Forum~
It's a good thing just to explore every nook & cranny of the forum to know what you are dealing with. Familiarize yourself with all the sections and what kinds of threads people post in those sections.
Once you feel confident enough, start posting! And Welcome to SiNfuL iPhone!!
~Other Tips and Suggestions~
~DON'T BE A LEECHER!!~
Everyone hates leechers. Leechers are people to sign up only to reap the benefits of a forum and when they got what they came for, they leave never to be seen again. This is not only rude, but remember that the people on here are taking care of this forum and answering questions in their spare time. They are doing everyone a favor and feel offended if they are taken advantage of. This is why you should try to read some of the previous posts and inform yourself of some technological info before posting your first thread.
You would be amazed what a good friend the button can turn out to be. When you have a problem, ALWAYS, ALWAYS search for your topic AND THEN if you don't find it you are more than welcome to start a thread in the correct section.
~Don't be Vague or General~
When you start threads, make sure they have an informative and descriptive title. Avoid titles such as "Help Me!!" and "I have a problem!!". Also, when describing your problem, be sure to include sufficient information so that other members don't have to post asking for more information regarding the problem. Include all that in one post.
~Assessing the Trustworthiness of a User~
Many times in this forum, you will see guides and suggestions that if done incorrectly may brick (Or make your iPhone/iPod/iPad useless) your iDevice. You need to know whether or not to trust the person telling you to do such risky operations. One way is to see their VIP Status. A full VIP status can indicate that they are devoted to this forum and you can generally trust them. A low or empty VIP bar doesn't necessarily mean that you cannot trust the person, but to proceed with caution. The biggest deciding factor is the Thank/Post ratio. In my opinion, a trustworthy person should have half as many thanks as he has posts. for example, if somebody has 1,000 posts, they should have at least 500 thanks. Anyone can post 30 times a day, but only true members make them useful to people. I'm not saying that you couldn't trust anyone else because I have many buds on this forum with not that many thanks, but just be careful
~Choose a readable Font~
When selecting your font, be sure to choose something that will be easily readable for other members. Color such as dark blue, gray and black are a bit hard to see. Choose good contrasting colors such as red, light blue, green...
We take pride in being one of the only major iPhone Forums; or any forums in that matter, that isn't supported by advertisements. That gives you no right to come on here and start publicizing some random product or web site. This website is for people to come together and discuss Apple; not to browse for useless surplus. You want to advertise, go somewhere else.
