iPhone froze: charge screen w/o charger??

Pulled iPhone out of my pocket and there was the battery screen with the icon showing same as when hooked up to charger. Only problem, it was not hooked to charger. Could not slide to unlock. Turned it off via home/power buttons.
Now it just gives me the apple icon which flashes back on time and again. Any help on what the heck has happened?

Something you installed may have caused this. Is it on a Boot loop ?

It appears to be stuck in a boot loop. I can get the apple logo icon by holding the home/power buttons. However it just stays there for a while, flashes off quickly and right back on. Time and time again. If I attempt to connect it to the computer, or to the charger itself, even when turned off, the icon will come on immediately. Cannot get iTunes to recognize the device. In fact, I have to open iTunes before I connect it to the computer. I cannot open iTunes with the iPhone already connected.

Tried holding both power and home buttons for one minute. Result: full screen of bright white appeared. This then went away and the apple (snow flake) icon reappeared on the screen. Before I tried doing that, I had to charge the phone. when I pushed the power button a low battery (empty battery w/ red image )appeared with an electric bolt below. I thought I might be ok. Wrong
When ever I connect to usb or direct charger, the snow flake icon will appear and stay. Disconnecting the phone and holding both power and home will get the icon to shut off. Nothing recognized when connecting to laptop and itunes.
