My personal opinion is a 3G is a 2G with 3G data capability, not much difference. I have a 3Gs, and have compared it to a 3G, and there is a big difference between the two.

I'm broke or I would probably get a 4, but not sure about the constantly reported signal problem. I don't want a contract, so I will for now stay away from the 4S.

What I will say is that a 3Gs kicks ass on the 3G, and 2G.

4G is quite a bit faster than 3G on paper anyway. I've read that 4G is capable of download speed up to 56Mbps or something like that but realistically you'll probably see nothing over 10Mbps if your extremely lucky. I've tethered my phone before and seen 4Mbps downloading from a news server with my IP4 on 3G but typically it's about 1-2Mbps. Check out Wikipedia, there is all kinds of information there about the different network types.

3G is slower than 4G.
That's all there is to it.

The difference is 1.

No I thing the 3g speeds are capped at a max of 7.2 mbps, I have gotten 5 some times, 4g I believe is suppose to be about double the speed but it depends if its HSPA+ or LTE I think either way real world speed tests would probably be around 10 mbps which is as good as most of your cable download times. I can't wait till the next Iphone comes out, that should be 4g LTE network I hope, as most networks will ne on that by then. The Ip4s is HSPA+ I wonder what they're clocking on there speed tests.
